“Once
upon a time, when women were birds, there was the simple understanding
that to sing at dawn and to sing at dusk was to heal the world through
joy. The birds still remember what we have forgotten, that the world is
meant to be celebrated.”
― Terry Tempest Williams, When Women Were Birds
My inspiration for painting comes from nature. A
week-long birding trip to Southeastern Arizona 20 years ago was the catalyst that started my love affair with birds. I was so captivated by the experience
(15 species of
hummingbirds!) that I went on to earn a certificate
in Field Ornithology and to live and travel internationally to see, photograph, and paint
birds. I currently live and work in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
At
the same time I started to paint birds, I moved away from oils and started to experiment with
watercolors. My new love of birds and a new medium worked in
tandem to create my unique style. My fanciful borders
are often inspired by the bird's habitat or, sometimes, it's simply artistic fancy that reflects how
I feel about that particular bird.
I hope you enjoy visiting my galleries. Please contact me with questions or comments or a good bird story. (I know you have one!)
With respect for all living things, Judy Boyd | Santa Fe, New Mexico 2020
Left: Having fun at Kid's Camp (front row, green shirt) during my artist residency at Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine where I painted at the desk of Mabel Todd Loomis where she once sat to edit the work of Emily Dickinson. It was the experience of a lifetime. Did I mention the puffins?

My
paintings have been selected for juried art exhibitions around the Southwest region of United States and in Mexico. I am currently a member of the New Mexico Watercolor Society and
the Santa Fe Society of Artists (President 2018-2019). I had the honor of being selected as the Artist in Residence at the Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine in 2017. You can see my work in person at the Jemez Fine Art Gallery in Jemez Springs, NM.

Thank you for the
birding festival calendar. Your paintings are wonderful, full of fun, and
attitude. Your pictures are not only beautiful, but they have a lot to say
about the bird's personality. I love the depiction of the Spotted Towhee ... I
have been a long admirer of the Common Raven. ... Your raven obviously has a
superior attitude, daring anyone to challenge his dominance. Sincerely yours, Whitney
I received my
eagle print yesterday, as well as the extras you enclosed with it. Thanks for
the note cards, I love them! The print arrived in great condition, and I had it
in the frame within an hour of receiving it. Take care, Susan
